Healthcare Data Accessibility
Acute - an app for your life
Acute is an application born out the inconvenience of managing your healthcare data. Acute represent the struggle of viewing, finding, and transfer healthcare information between providers, insurance companies, and the patient.
Team and role
UX designer and researcher
Master's thesis, 2020
Rhode Island School of Design
Context
Problem
Many patients frequently utilizing the health system are required to find, organize, and present their healthcare history across multiple physicians, insurance, and caregivers.
Question
Is it helpful and feasible to compile and present a patients entire healthcare record across multiple healthcare systems in a single application? What incentives would it take for a system like that to successfully operate?
Proposal
Acute is a theoretical and discursive application that is proposed to collect and compile patient information for the user by incentivizing cross-cooperation across systems.

Experiments
Between interviews and research, a series of experimental prototypes were designed and tested to gather further feedback into specific sectors of the problem.
Solutions such as hardware data jammers representing protection of data or applications using data as currency were created as conversation starters to understand the depth of certain aspects.
From there, the larger solution took the form of Acute

Experiment 1
Data as currency
November, 2019
Visual representation of a data market app, allowing the user to exchange data as currency
Experiment 2
Data Jammer
November, 2019
Product restricting wireless access to data transformation
Experiment 3
Data Transactions
January, 2020
Visual respresentation of a data market app, allowing the user to exchange data as currency
Personas
Iterative research initiated the creation of three personas dictating the needs and journeys of the critical users.
User testing
Initial prototypes of Acute were tested and adjusted based on UX principles of task analysis. 5 participants per round of iteration over the course of 4 iterations contributed to the overall outcome of the design.
Testing was all virtual as a result of the pandemic.

Platform and application
From the research and testing iteration came the application Acute. It has three main components for understanding you EHR related medical information: Health file management, prescription tracking, and billing management. Within each one of these you are able to see across all providers, regardless of EHR or healthcare system.
File management
Accessing a comprehensive medical record, with options to dive deeper or favorite recurring records.

Prescription tracking
Viewing current and past prescriptions, managing negative interactions, and seeing uses for each
Billing
View costs for health care, access individual charges , view errant or unplanned medical bills
